The Hot Tub & Swim Spa Expos: Why we’re not there and why you shouldn’t be either We get asked all the time by our current customers, friends, family, neighbours and prospective hot tub buyers: “Are you going to be at the big Spa Expo this weekend?” We understand why they are asking. Hot Tub and Swim Spa Expos like these do a large amount of advertising saying “Multiple brands competing for your business, best price guaranteed!” And it would make sense that we would be at an event where there are multiple hot tub brands, right? But we’re not and neither are our local competitors. Here’s why you shouldn’t be there either:
- Multiple Brands are NOT present at the Hot Tub and Swim Spa Expo.
The big reason why Backyard Retreat Home & Leisure isn’t there is because these shows actually only represent ONE brand of hot tub or swim spa. Household name-brands like Hydropool, Beachcomber, or Arctic Spas aren’t going to be there. The hot tub and swim spa expo gets away with advertising multiple brands because the manufacturer carries a few different lines of hot tubs BUT they all come from the same place, and one hot tub dealer represents them all.
- The Hot Tub dealer is NOT local and in most cases, NOT even Canadian.
More often than not, this one hot tub dealer represents an American manufacturer which makes hot tubs for an American climate. I don’t know about you but winter in Canada is VERY different from winter in California, Florida or most of the southern US. Not only can this quickly turn into a nightmare if your hot tub or swim spa needs servicing but they usually offer very limited warranties because they won’t be around if something were ever to go wrong. Hot tubs and swim spas, like cars, sometimes need tune-ups and maintenance and a one-year warranty isn’t going to help much with that. Besides the misrepresentation of “multiple brands”, here are a few things we’ve learned from customers and friends who have visited:
- No chance to try the hot tubs
These hot tub and swim spa expos are usually a one weekend only event, so the expo will be filled with hot tubs, swim spas, salespeople, and people browsing around. The hot tubs brought in are to be sold immediately, on the floor, as is. Since the sales team will be pushing the models they have on display, their priority is not to accommodate your specific needs – they want what’s in your wallet as fast as possible. They will have models of course that you can sit in but not one hot tub or swim spa will be filled with water (who’d want to strip down into a bathing suit in a crowded expo center anyway?!) Just like when purchasing a car, it’s important to take the hot tub on a test drive, so to speak. Local hot tub dealers give you the option to “wet test” a filled and heated hot tub or swim spa before you buy.
- High-Pressure Sales Reps
The sales reps at these kinds of expos are brought in specifically for the event. They are experienced show salespeople, and know all the tricks to get the sale on the spot (if they don’t close that deal that weekend, they don’t commission.) They are high-pressure and want you to make an impulse decision immediately. They’re not your friend, they won’t ever see you again once you’re on your way and they’ve got your money. It’s impossible for one person to take care of your hot tub, that’s why we have a knowledgeable team to assist you whenever you need it. We think it’s best to take your time when considering adding a hot tub or swim spa to your home. It’s an investment in both yourself and the people who are close to you. You should make sure that you’re picking the right brand with the right specifications, features and after-sales service. We offer, and even suggest, scheduling a backyard consultation with us before you take delivery.
- No chance to try the hot tubs
Be Informed; Ask Questions
If you do end up going to Hot Tub or Swim Spa Expo, here are some good questions to ask the salesperson:
- Do you operate a retail showroom locally?
- How long have you been in business?
- Who do I call for a service or repair issue?
- What is your cancellation policy?
- What kind of warranty do you offer?
